I have been wanting a pet for quite some time now. I've tried to adopt a teacup dog two separate times but have always been the second person to fill out the application papers. I've researched getting a doggie door for my sliders, if I could bring it to work with me and how to potty train it to use the litter box I'd place on my deck. However, it just isn't working out. So, during my visit to PetSmart today with Funaki, I decided to go simple in the pet department. Funaki has a fish and she said it was quite great as it didn't require a lot, although she left the store today having adopted a kitty so apparently she wants a more involved pet :)
I am now the proud owner of a blue bodied, red finned Beta fish who had the name Fred while we were in the store, but by the time I set him up in his new home, he became Squishy. The picture doesn't do him justice, he is actually quite pretty, and the most work he requires is holding a mirror up to his bowl every day so he gets a workout. (oh yeah, and sprinkling little balls of food for him to eat)
Cyber world, meet Squishy:

Cute Squishy - I like your bowl, simple. EM
I am scared of fish. And dogs and cats and any pets really. They freak me out. Thing 1 thinks he is getting a fish for his birthday. But he is not. I am a mean mom. A mean mom who is afraid of fish. But squishy looks like a nice enough fish. Congrats.
Beautiful fish.
However, there are lot of myths about betta fish that unfortunately shorten their lifespans. Betta fish enthusiasts recommend at least a 2.5 gallon tank with a heater, as bettas are tropical fish who prefer 78-80 degree water.
Some great links.
