During after school tutoring yesterday I had a student ask me what a hammock was. I tried to explain it to her and when she obviously didn't know what it was, I ended up going to Google Images to show her. Once she saw the picture, she said, "Oh, I've seen those in movies".
I was so surprised because I, naively, thought all people would know about the simple pleasure that is laying in a hammock, either with a girlfriend, lover or really good book. However, I guess I only know what it is because of my Aunt and Uncle, who have (I think, I actually don't know if it's still there) this huge hammock in their side yard tied between the two huge pine trees. Growing up we’d play on that hammock a lot, more than once I was flipped over and landed on the ground where the needles were.

Oh that is so sad. Hammocks are truly one of life's little pleasures. We love them so much we have one in our yard too!
Poor kid. My brother traded his bed for a hammock one year...and I've got one in the closet that I need to find a yard for.
I constantly surprised by how much I know about that people younger than me don't. We're in a college town, so a lot of the people I know at church are 21-27 ish and in grad school, or married to someone in grad school. They seem so young by what they don't remember/know about. And, I had older siblings, way older, so that makes it so I know all the early 80s songs, etc. even though I was just a toddler, etc. Does that make sense without me having to write a novella here?
